GvP for Blütenstraße 5
Integration (from the Latin integer, meaning whole or entire) is a long process of incorporating one part of a culture into another one. Though it sounds complicated and like a nasty piece of work, students from the Georg von Peuerbach Gymnasium showed how easy and joyful “joint venture” can be.
Blütenstraße 5 domiciles 20 unattended, underage refugees, most of them traumatised by experiences in their mother countries. Except their weekly language courses most of them did not know what to do with themselves all the time. So boredom and hopelessness spread all over, until the GvP pupils of the seventh form decided to play soccer with them once a week. Three years later they do not only go in for sports, they also organise parties at Christmas and Easter to celebrate together. On the 4th of June they finally presented their project to their parents, teachers and other interested people in order to collect money to support the refugees. Therefore, they separated into two groups in the afternoon, one for sports, the other one formed a music work shop performed some songs in the evening.
In addition, the music group “Take Five” entertained all guests excellently and created a relaxed atmosphere, full of exotic rhythms. “It was great fun, when we were playing music, we could feel clearly how the cultures mixed up”, Stefan told and Fabian added:” I meet two of them also in my free time; they play in the same soccer team as I do. Unfortunately they are not integrated as well as they should be. It is difficult to establish relations, if you are not able to communicate with them because they are not good at speaking German.” Although language plays an important part in integration, the boys and girls form the GvP found a way to bond relations without any words.
